Illustrations for Rick Court's Blog

Our school has a new Dean, Rick Court, and we were asked to illustrated a few images based off of his blog post. One of the pictures were to be a main illustration, to show at the beginning of the blog, and we were asked to do a couple small illustrations to put throughout the post; just kind of narrowing down that one area.

So for the main illustration I kind of wanted to show how he'd been with Mohawk from the beginning. Kind of like he watched it grow up. So, on the left it shows Rick as a kid with his friends playing "kingers" in the background and the chestnut tree, subtly, off to the side; his past. Then on the right would be his present self with Mohawk in the background.
I went really cartoony with this one because I've been drawing little depictions of my friends for the last few weeks, and they liked them so much, that I thought it might be kind of cute to use the style for one of my projects.

In the main picture there are chestnuts, and a tie in the top corners of the illustration. I thought it would be a nice touch. Also it gave me a way of transitioning between the two styles used for the main picture and the smaller ones. I thought it was a cool way of tying them together. I also gave it the same sort of background.. thingy.
This one is of a hard hat, which I would assume he wore while working at the Blast Furnace mentioned in his blog. The background kind of looks fire-ish to maybe imply what kind of working conditions he had to endure. I'm thinking it was kind of like hell...

The next little illustration is of a basketball. So exciting! Please tell us more! Rick had mentioned that he played basketball in his spare time. And I like basketball, so that's why I went with that.
I know right? So symbolic.

This was actually a rather fun project to work on. I liked tying everything together to make it look like it all fit. And drawing little cartoon people is so much fun.
I hope it all works as well as I think it does. O.o'

Propagation.

Heh, so, hello everyone.
Just a really quick illustration for IF this week. Since I'm supposed to be focusing on something else right now.
I didn't want to miss IF this week, so I didn't go with anything terribly personal.

A few of my friends and I may understand this just a little more, and find it a tad more amusing because of it.

Kay, so I got the idea from one of my friends (use to be a roommate). Now it didn't actually happen like this, but it's just where the idea was born. You see, my friend... we'll call him Tim.. Yes, Tim.

Well Tim loves the internet; he loves to play games and talk to friends. But one day, our landlady decided to cut the internet for some unknown reason. This makes Tim sad. :( see, that's Tim sad.
And after a few days of no internet, and nothing to do, Tim got a little crazy. One night Tim and I were sitting in the common room, watching the limited channels that we had.

Now, before I go any further, let me just say that our landlady, at the time, was like in love with plants and had them all over the house.

So anyways, back to the story. We were sitting in the common room, with all of these plants, and Tim started to tweak, because one of the plants kept touching the back of his neck. Next thing I know Tim had taken a bite out of the plant and was looking really crazy.

So that is where my idea started, from there my strange mind just took over. Added a little twist to the whole situation (since the real one had nothing to do with propagation) and this is what I came up with.

Doctor Who.

I've been wanting to do something like this since I heard that David Tennant's character was being replaced for the role of The Doctor, in the British t.v. series Doctor Who.

I felt the need for the introduction, because anytime I talk about Doctor Who with anyone, they never know who I'm talking about. If you are one of those people, then I suggest you watch a few episodes. It's only one of the greatest shows I've ever seen.

So this is my tribute to David Tennant.

When he first started as the Doctor, I was kind of unsure of him. Probably cause I actually liked the Doctor before him, and we only had one season with him.
I quickly realized that David Tennant was brilliant. His quirky habits grew on me, and before I knew it, he was gone. What can I say? I was so heartbroken, that when he said his last line: "I don't want to go," I shouted back at the t.v.: "then don't go!" D:

We Doctor Who fan's only got a few seconds to judge the new Doctor (Matt Smith) in that last episode, but I really hope he can live up to the expectations that we have.

Adrift

This weeks IF topic was "Adrift".
This time, I didn't put up the first thing that came to mind. To be honest, the first thing I thought of was a scene from "Castaway", when Tom Hanks character is yelling for Wilson (the volleyball), and the ball is just drifting away. I always laugh at that part. XD I'm so terrible.

But after a few days of, playing video games, long hard thinking, I decided to go with something a little more personal.

Yes, so... I looked up the meaning of adrift, and I got a few definitions...
-drifting, afloat, cast off, unmoored, aweigh, unanchored
-aimless, goalless, directionless, purposeless
-free, separated, divided, loose, severed, loosened, disconnected, unconnected, disjoined

My research note taking was much less organized than this initially, I just kind of cleaned it up so I could sort of show my thought process a little. The last few were ones I related with most (I think anyone can, really).

This illustration represents how I sometimes feel in society. Kind of like I'm separate. Disconnected. Not quite living in the same reality as everyone else; somehow gone adrift (Yes apparently I see everything in rainbows... XD Gosh I wish).

Cereal Commercial - Rough Sketch

These are very rough sketches for a cereal commercial I'm working on.

Frame 1: It's a busy restaurant, clearly a very classy place. It shows a few tables, with men in suits all sitting around tables.
Frame 2: Zoom in of a businessman looking at a menu, you can also see his companions looking at menus.
Frame 3: Waiter comes up and asks what they want.
Frame 4: Again it shows the man looking at his menu. He kind of looks divided. Like he's not sure of what to order.

Frame 5: He's ordered Din-O's the cereal. And everyone is looking at him with odd looks. Like he might be ill or something.
Frame 6: Everyone then turns the the Waiter and changes their order to the cereal.
Frame 7: Time skip to them 'nom noming' away at their cereal.
Frame 8: Zoom in on cereal.

Muddy

Hello world!

Sooo.. this weeks IF topic was "Muddy"... and I had no idea what to do for it. I didn't even start it until like 10:00 pm last night, even though I had the entire day off. The rest of the day was occupied by Zelda playing.. heh.
Procrastinating aside. I did get it finished! And this is what I came up with.

Awe so cute right?

Yeah, not so much when it's your cat, and that mud is on all over your bed, and through the house.

Alright, so the cat is loosely base off of my own cat, Nelly. I basically just stole the markings on her face. The illustrated kitty looks far to young to be my Nelly. I think I'll name this little gal Muddy actually.
Gosh I'm so good at naming animals. 8D I really should do it more often. I would tell you how I got Nelly's name, except it was a very long time ago, and I cannot hold my younger self accountable for that; I wasn't the smartest cookie back then.

Anyways. Muddy was just doing her thing; rolling around in the mud and all. Then tracked it all in the house. Mischa is not impressed. :/
But goodness, doesn't she look cute? How can you be mad at a face like that?

Cereal Ad

Hello world!

For this post I will be showing the process I took, from sketch to finished product, for a project in my illustration class. We were meant to take a children's cereal that we designed last year, and target that to a different demographic in an ad for a magazine.

Okay, so to start, this is a very rough sketch. Rough enough that I really wouldn't expect anyone to understand what exactly you're looking at. It's just for my reference really. I did a few of these, but I'm just showing the one I based the finished off of.

Yeah, doesn't look like much yet.
So, from there, I went to a comprehensive. Again, I did more of these. But for the blog I'm just showing the one.

As you can see I have three of my most favorite characters from different t.v. shows. And incase you can't tell, it's House, Dexter, and Doctor Who. At this point I wasn't 100% sure where I was going with all of this. But Leif (my teacher) said that I should tie them all together some how, and obviously get a background going.

Tie them together you say? I hope this works...

So, as you can see. I kinda threw a rainbow at their faces. Yeah, that should tie them together well. I really hadn't intended to do that. Honestly I was just doodling on House's face with colour just to see what it would look like. I got the idea from a Dexter episode. If anyone watches Dexter they may know what I'm talking about, when Lila found out Dexter was a serial killer and painted him all creepy-like with really pretty colours.
Anyways! I liked the outcome of House, why not do the others! Since my cereal box is rainbow-ish anyways (which is shown as an ad on Dexter's newspaper.. incase you missed it), it worked.. in a, if-you-eat-this-cereal-you'll-look-rainbowy, kind of way (which by they way, would be my perfect world). Everything else just kind of fell together after that. Everything was done digitally with my new tablet, I'm still getting use to it..

The little blurbs on the side of each character were last minute ideas. I just thought they were funny. The one for Doctor Who doesn't really work for the cereal, but I seriously couldn't think of anything else to put... It was "Allons-y" or something about his dislike for pears...
